Despite previous rumors, it appears that Apple has decided not to equip the upcoming 2024 iPad Air with a mini-LED screen. Although mini-LED technology was first introduced by the company in the 2021 iPad Pro, it seems to remain exclusive to the Pro series due to high manufacturing costs.

According to analyst Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), his sources revealed that Apple will opt for an LCD screen instead of a mini-LED one for the iPad Air from 2024. This decision is justified by the considerably higher price of the panels mini-LED, compared to LCD ones.

A new iPad model with a mini-LED screen could be released in Q4 2024

However, Young also mentioned that Apple plans to introduce a new iPad model equipped with a mini-LED display in the last quarter of 2024. For now, it is not known exactly if this device will be part of the iPad Pro lineup or will represent a new series of tablets.

Mini-LED technology offers superior contrast and deep black areas compared to LCD panels, but does not reach the performance of OLED screens. By using much smaller LEDs to illuminate the screen, mini-LED displays can reproduce richer, more accurate colors.

The full specifications of the upcoming iPad Air remain unknown

Although Apple is known to be working on a new version of the iPad Air tablet, its full technical specifications are not yet available. It remains to be seen whether, apart from the LCD screen, the company will bring other significant improvements to this series of devices.

In conclusion, Apple’s decision to abandon mini-LED screens for the iPad Air from 2024 may disappoint some of the company’s fans, but it is justified by the high production costs. However, a new iPad model equipped with mini-LED technology could be released by the end of next year, thus providing an alternative for those who want a superior visual experience.
