With more and more young people being diagnosed with colorectal cancer, concern about this disease is growing, HuffPost writes.

Dr. Michael Cecchini, co-director of the colorectal cancer program at the Gastrointestinal Cancer Center and oncologist at Yale Cancer Center, notes that rates of colorectal cancer in people under 50 have increased since the 1990s.

The exact reason for this increase remains unknown. “Experts think it’s related to lifestyle and environment, but we don’t know exactly what that factor is,” explained Cecchini. While research continues, it is essential to remain vigilant about colorectal cancer, even if you are young.

Part of this process is knowing the warning signs. A symptom that has attracted attention on social networks is the appearance of thin stools the thickness of a pencil.

On the TikTok platform, one user explained that he noticed his stools were thinner than usual, along with other alarming symptoms such as unexplained weight loss and diarrhea. Initially, he thought he was suffering from irritable bowel syndrome and did not go to the doctor. When he finally did, he was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer.

Here is what the experts say about this particular issue:

Thin stool can be a warning sign. Doctors sometimes encounter patients whose stools are much thinner or the size and thickness of a pencil, Cecchini explained.

This situation usually occurs when tumors are present near the end of the colon or when they cover its entire interior, narrowing any passing stool, Cecchini added.

It is essential to pay attention to the appearance of the stool and notice any change in bowel habits. If you notice changes such as the shape or consistency of the stool, or if you go to the bathroom more or less often, it is important to consult a doctor.

If you notice any symptoms, it is important to tell your doctor. Never ignore the symptoms, Cecchini stressed. If you notice blood in your stool, chronic abdominal pain, changes in your bowel movements, or unexplained weight loss, it’s crucial to talk to your doctor.

In general, having a colonoscopy or other screening test for colorectal cancer is the best way to lower your risk or catch it in its early stages.
