Rower Ancuța Bodnar declared, on Monday, upon her arrival from Hungary, after the bronze medal won in the double rowing event at the European Championships in Szeged, that the result does not upset her, but motivates her to continue working alongside her colleague, Simona Radiş .

“After a long time with gold, this bronze medal also came. We are not upset with the result, it really motivates us to keep working and correct our mistakes, so that at the next competition we can show our true worth. In Szeged there was a competition where I had a lot to learn, with very well-prepared opponents, with unfavorable conditions, but I can say that I gave everything I could at that moment to have the best possible result”, she said at the Airport’s Official Salon “Henri Coandă”, upon returning from the European Championships.

Bodnar claims that Romania can get more medals in rowing at the Olympic Games than Great Britain, which occupied the first place in the national ranking at EC 2024. “We are behind the British team, we want to surpass them in Paris in ranking on medals, because they have nothing more than us”, said Ancuța Bodnar.

Her boatmate, Simona Radiş, said that the opponents from Szeged were happy that they managed to defeat the Olympic champions.

“I came close to the gold in 8+1, after a difficult race in the doubles boat. Although it was not the result everyone wanted, it did not upset us, it motivates us. We know what they were the mistakes, we know where we still have to work and we will definitely reach the Olympic Games in our best shape. Surely the opponents were happy because they managed to beat the Olympic championships. We give them all the respect… but Ancuța he clearly said at the end of the race that we’ll see each other in Paris,” she said.

“Before we left we were always asked what makes us continue because we have all the goals achieved and the complete record. Now, just to make a joke, look we didn’t have the complete record. Now we can say that it is more complete because in the European we now have bronze, after gold and silver. We have to understand that we are human and it happens that we are not always at the level we want to be. But we certainly do not stop there because Paris is approaching, and things will certainly be different there,” added Simona Radiş.

Romania finished second in the final standings, with eight medals, four gold, two silver and two bronze, ahead of Great Britain (8-1-1), but finishing ahead of Italy (2-3-3) , of Norway (2-0-1), of Germany (2-5-1), etc.

On Saturday, Romania won three medals, one gold, one silver and one bronze. The gold of the tricolors was won in the double rowing, light category (Gianina van Groningen and Ionela Cozmiuc), the silver was won in the women’s four row (Mădălina Bereş, Maria Lehaci, Magdalena Rusu and Amalia Bereş), and the bronze in the men’s 8+1 ( Mihăiță Șigănescu, Ciprian Tudosă, Constantin Adam, Mugurel Vasile Semciuc, Florin Arteni, Sergiu Bejan, Ştefan Berariu, Florin Lehaci, Adrian Munteanu).

On Sunday, Ioana Vrînceanu and Roxana Anghel won gold in the women’s double sculls, Andrei-Sebastian Cornea and Marian Enache prevailed in the men’s double sculls, the third gold medal being obtained in the women’s 8+1 (Magdalena Rusu, Roxana Anghel, Adriana Adam, Maria Lehaci, Mădălina Bereş, Amalia Bereş, Ioana Vrînceanu, Simona Radiş, Victoria-Ştefania Petreanu), Florin Arteni and Florin Lehaci won silver in the men’s double sculls, and Ancuța Bodnar and Simona Radiş won the bronze in the women’s double sculls .

Romania qualified 12 crews in the medal finals out of the 13 they sent to Szeged.

At the 2023 edition of the European Championships, held in Bled (Slovenia), Romania won six medals, including five gold and one silver.
