The missed call method is the scam that is wreaking havoc in a lot of countries around the world. Charlatans who do not want to work, but to get rich off of others, become more and more inventive and find new techniques, such as the present one. Unlike other tricks they’ve used in the past, this time you don’t even need to answer the call. The authorities explained how the scheme actually works and what to do to avoid falling into the trap.

Over the years, there have been many ways in which robbers have managed to steal considerable sums from citizens. From classic phone texts to artificial intelligence methods, now they have found a new “invention”. If you suddenly find yourself with a missed call or two from unsaved names in your phonebook, you could be a target for thieves. Chances are, you won’t even hear the phone ring.

Criminals take advantage of people’s curiosity, but also their fear when it comes to the unknown. There are many who call back the numbers that called them, in fact, for only two or three seconds. If you call back, you’re already falling into the trap, so it’s extremely important to understand how the scam works.

How the scam works. Numbers you don’t have to answer

When you call the numbers that called you, the people on the other end of the “line” are from a foreign country for which you will pay a huge extra cost. Thieves looking for you get a commission from your calls. The more time you spend talking, and they look to shoot what this time, the more you will have to give.

The Spanish Civil Guard warns that you should not answer numbers starting with the following prefixes:

• 355 (Albania);
• 225 (Ivory Coast);
• 233 (Ghana);
• 234 (Nigeria).

The scam also works in Romania. You must not have the numbers published on various sites or give them to anyone. Robbers dial random numbers until they find victims. As a result, it is recommended that you ignore numbers you do not know, especially if they are from abroad.
