The town where you can find the “tower of Pisa”, the Romanian version

In Romania there are a lot of spectacular places and more. Also, in our country there are a lot of monuments that are visited by foreigners, such as the Arc de Triomphe.

But who thought that there is also the “tower of Pisa”, the Romanian version? The truth is that this building has nothing to do with the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa, but it has something in common, namely the fact that it leans.

Where is it found? In the village of Rusi, which is in the middle of the road between Sibiu and Mediaș. Here, arriving tourists can see even from a few kilometers away the leaning tower of the local church.

What is the story and why did the construction earn its name as the “tower of Pisa”, the Romanian version? The place of worship was built in 1741. And the extreme phenomena that took place over the years left their mark on it.

Numerous landslides have occurred in this area. And all this made the tower lean a few degrees, little by little, from year to year. Anyway, the church has totally degraded compared to how it was in the first phase.

Several extreme phenomena have hit the building in the last decades

For example, in 1846 the top of the bell tower collapsed, and later, in 1858, the church was affected by an earthquake. The troubles continued in such a way that the tower was also struck by lightning in 1944 and 1966.

Between 1955 and 1968, landslides followed, which contributed to the tilting of the building. And all these things gave birth to the “tower of Pisa”, the Romanian version.

However, the locals say that the situation would have worsened even earlier. Most of them tell that as early as 1778 the tower suddenly began to lean and did not stop until a hundred years later.

“You can see with the naked eye this inclination greater than that of Mediaș and even greater than that of Pisa, experts say, please, at a different height, it is a shorter tower but it has that charm.

On the one hand, it seems almost dangerous, it could fall, but experts say that there is no danger at least for the next half century there is no such danger. Now the locals are proud to have such a monument in the village”, revealed Klaus Martin Untch, priest, according to Digi 24.

Even so, the tower has already become a tourist attraction. A lot of people come to see him and convince themselves of what happened. Moreover, even the renovation of the church is being considered in the next period.
