The recent case of the little girl who died after ingesting magnetic beads occurred in Germany. The family, originally from Romania, is settled in Germany, and the first symptoms and the diagnosis of enterocolitis led to the notification of the presence of those objects in the body, which were fatal. Following the investigations, the doctors determined that 5 magnets of a very small size had been swallowed. The magnets were bought on the Internet by another person who was visiting that family. According to the chief commissioner of the Constanța County Commissariat for Consumer Protection, Ecaterina Scînteie, all products that are put up for sale, regardless of where they come from, have labels that warn the buyer to prevent a tragedy.

“We had no complaints here in Constanța, I was even surprised. In no year have there been any problems with children swallowing toy components and having health problems. There is that international system for notifying dangerous products, objects that have been tested and found to be dangerous for children. If the toy is not identified on the site with a warning, it means that it has not been identified as a dangerous toy. According to the law, any manufacturer, importer, distributor of toys must put some warnings on the product label. If it has small parts, the warning «caution, contains small parts, danger of suffocation» is placed. If it is – I know – a water toy, it says “not to be used except in the presence of adults”. There are different warnings. So, for any toy, before putting it on the market, the manufacturer must analyze it against a European standard. Even if they produce it in China, they have to make sure that it is within the European parameters and standard. And if the product corresponds to the European standard, with all the criteria that are provided for the respective type of toy, it is put on the market with the respective warnings. That is, it does not represent a danger if it is used correctly”, Ecaterina Scînteie told us.

Representatives of the National Authority for Consumer Protection recommend that buyers, especially when it comes to parents, always check and read the toy label very carefully. They report that the institution has repeatedly notified various products coming from China, for example, extremely dangerous, to be banned. “We are primarily addressing the parents who buy these toys. We are in the market, we check whenever we have the opportunity if the stores selling such products have put all this information on the product label opposite the correct, complete and precise information of the consumer”, they said.
