A series of scholarships for those who want to follow training programs to teach foreign languages or physics in schools in England are currently promoted by the British authorities – including in Romania, through the British Council. The program of support for participation in such programmes, for people who are not British citizens, mainly concerns two types of scholarships, with values of up to £28-30,000.

On Tuesday, the British Council Romania sent a link on Facebook to the page promoting these programs, on the page of the Department for Education within the London Government, with the mention: “Do you want to teach in England? The British Council and other institutions, along with the British government, offer scholarships for foreign language and physics teachers.”

The Institution’s linked page mentions three forms of support – training programs in which trained teachers receive a salary as well, programs that are said to be “very limited in number and very competitive; scholarships for students; respectively scholarships for training as foreign language or physics teachers.

The two types of scholarships presented:, which are mentioned as not being cumulative:

  • Scholarships of up to £28,000 for language and physics teacher training
  • Scholarships of up to £30,000 to train French, German, Spanish or Physics teachers.

The page cited states that these are non-taxable amounts provided by the UK government and do not need to be returned. It is also stated that they can be included in visa applications, as proof that the candidate can support himself during his stay in the UK.

The quoted website states that, on average, the fees for such courses for non-UK nationals are almost £15,000 (ie around half the value of the scholarships), but students also have to cover the costs associated with their stay in Great Britain.

The initiative is heard at a time when, in Romania, a series of authorities and experts draw attention to the shortage of science teachers, including physics, in the Romanian education system. In March, State Secretary Florian Lixandru said that there are physics positions in good high schools that are not filled. And at the end of last year, the president of the Educational Evaluation and Analysis Center, Cristian Hatu, drew attention to the fact that “very few new physics teachers are coming into the system, in 5 years there will be a collapse”.
