In a time dominated by climate change concerns, electric cars are increasingly becoming an attractive option for many consumers. However, the transition to this type of vehicle should be more than a simple compliance with the regulations imposed by the authorities, believes Adrian Sandu, general secretary of the Romanian Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACAROM).

“The market is moving. The exchange between consumers of traditional diesel and gasoline vehicles to fully electric ones goes through hybrid cars. Automatic is a step in electrification, but in a free market, the change to electric cars must start from the consumer’s desire, not from a regulation imposed by the European Commission”.

Adrian Sandu points out that in the charging infrastructure area for electric cars, if the threshold of zero emissions by 2035 were to be met, it would mean that every week, in Europe, 11,000 charging points would be opened, from 3,500-4,000 currently, of which over 60% are in Germany and the Netherlands.

“As an industry, we are committed to complying with the 2035 threshold, i.e. to market only cars with zero emissions, but here all the actors in the market must be involved. We need charging infrastructure for electric cars, raw materials and materials that will allow us to build and produce electric car batteries at a competitive price. The trend towards electrification must be supported by bonusing the purchase. The automotive industry invests at European level over 60 billion euros annually in research and development, in innovation, both in terms of the cars themselves and in terms of batteries and engines. In order to be competitive, we must also be supported, not just have regulations”.
