More than 60 cities in Europe, including ten cities in Romania, will project messages encouraging citizens to vote, one month before the European elections from June 6-9.

Paris’ Arc de Triomphe, Rome’s Colosseum, Bucharest’s Arc de Triomphe and Brussels’ Central Square are among the EU’s most important architectural landmarks to be lit up to mark Europe Day on 9 May and the countdown a month before of the European elections (June 6-9). On Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 May, the motto of the European Parliament’s institutional campaign (“Use your vote. Or others will decide for you”) or the European flag will be projected.

Other participating landmarks and buildings include the Samuel Beckett Bridge and National Parliament Buildings in Dublin, Vilnius City Hall, Fort St Angelo in Valletta, the Presidential Palace in Bratislava, Cibeles Square in Madrid, the Palace of Parliament and the Victoria Palace in Bucharest. In Romania, the town hall buildings in the cities of Arad, Buzău, Craiova, Constanța, Pitesti, Timișoara, the theater in Galați, the Palace of Culture in Drobeta Turnu Severin and a number of buildings in Cluj will be illuminated.

With cities across the continent taking part in this symbolic action, the European Parliament, national and local authorities are working together to send a message of solidarity to 440 million European citizens about the importance of the European elections for the future of all. May 9, Europe Day, is not only a day of celebration, but also a day to think about our common future. The approach of the elections makes May 9 an occasion charged with more significance than ever.

Europe Day celebrates peace and unity in Europe. May 9th marks the anniversary of the “Schuman Declaration”, which ushered in a new form of political cooperation in Europe, making war between the nations of Europe unthinkable. Schuman’s proposal is considered to be the beginning of what is now the European Union.
