Oradea City Hall suspended its work with the public on Friday afternoon, following a cyber attack that paralyzed the computer network. The counter hall on the ground floor of the administrative palace, where the people of Oradea submit their requests and pay their tax obligations, was closed starting at 2 p.m.

The computer system of the Oradea City Hall stopped working on Friday, at around 12 o’clock, after several repeated sessions during the day in which the institution’s employees had no access to the database or the Internet.

It all fell off!

The computer network started to fail this morning. “There were two or three times in the first part of the day when the computer network and the wireless system went down. Then when they came back up, I could barely get on the internet until about 2 p.m. when everything went down.” told for Bihor an employee of the City Hall.

As a result of the unavailability of the system, the working hours of the Oradea City Hall closed on Friday around 2 p.m.

“I was informed that the network is not working and will not restart until the end of the working hours, so, because the computers were not working anyway, I withdrew the operations from the counters room”, said the economic director of the Oradea City Hall, Eduard Florea .

The opening hours for the public in Sala Ghiseeelor ​​is Friday until 3:30 p.m., so that the operations can close their operations over the week.

The short schedule is an exception, during the rest of the week the counters are open from Monday to Friday between 8:00 and 18:00.

“There was a cyber attack”…

According to the representatives of the Oradea City Hall, the system with hundreds of computers of the municipality was attacked by hackers.

“There was a cyber attack on the Oradea City Hall that affected the servers, and at the moment they are working on analyzing and restoring the situation”, he told Bihor Călin Corpaş, mayor Florin Birta’s advisor, in charge of the municipality’s IT issues.

The cyber attack was felt around noon, when one of the City Hall’s servers failed, and continues to manifest itself.

Despite this fact, the municipality’s IT experts are of the opinion that the attackers could not steal data and the City Hall, which has several backup systems, did not lose any information.

The representatives of the municipality have already requested the support of the specialists of the National Directorate for Cyber ​​Security, and formalities are currently being done for reporting to DIICOT in order to identify and sanction the attackers.

The cyber system of the Oradea City Hall was also attacked by hackers in the past years, but without them causing damage or data loss to the municipality.
