Photovoltaic park and renewable energy sources for public buildings in Alba Iulia. The municipality of Alba Iulia is taking a step towards sustainable development, through an ambitious project of the City Hall worth almost 3.8 million lei, financed by Norwegian grants.

Following the investments made, primary energy consumption will be reduced by almost 35% in the institutions involved and the public lighting system in the city.

Photovoltaic panels on public buildings

The investment is ongoing through the project “Promotion of energy production from renewable sources for own consumption at the level of Alba Iulia Municipality – Photovoltaic park and photovoltaic plants at the level of five public buildings”.

As part of this project, photovoltaic panels have already been installed on the following public buildings in Alba Iulia:

  • Alba Iulia Town Hall: 132 panels producing 71.9 kW
  • “Horea, Cloșca and Crișan” National College: 122 panels with a production of 66.5 kW
  • “Apulum” Technical College: 70 panels generating 38.2 kW
  • “Avram Iancu” Secondary School: 48 panels providing 26.1 kW
  • “Mihai Eminescu” Secondary School: 96 panels with a capacity of 52.3 kW
  • “Ion Agârbiceanu” Secondary School: 106 panels producing 57.8 kW

In the next period, the inverters will be installed and parameterizations, synchronizations and connections between the equipment will be made.

Also through this project, a photovoltaic park is in an advanced stage of development, in the area of the city’s ring road.

Here, on an area of approximately 10,000 square meters, 1,414 photovoltaic modules of 550 Wp each will be installed, totaling a power of 777.7 kWp.

Project impact and funding

Following the investments made through the project, primary energy consumption will be reduced by 34.66% in the institutions involved and the public lighting system in Alba Iulia.

Also, CO2 emissions will be reduced by 403.49 tons per year, contributing to the achievement of the environmental targets assumed by the municipality.

The investment will increase the municipality’s renewable energy production capacity, but will also serve as a model for other cities aiming to move towards a greener future.

The project will be completed on April 30, 2024. It is financed by the EEA Financial Mechanism 2014-2021, Program for Energy in Romania, with a grant of 611,262 euros.
