Transforming communities through education and health: The example of the “Healthy Villages” project from Beica de Jos

How information and awareness become essential tools in improving health in rural areas

In an effort to reconfigure access to health services and promote hygiene education, the Beica de Jos commune in Mureș County hosted a series of initiatives under the umbrella of the “Healthy Villages” project. Launched by the local authorities in close collaboration with the Divers Association from Târgu-Mureș and the Bente Aid Foundation from Norway, this project represented a determined commitment towards improving the quality of life in the countryside.

The project manager, Mircea Nechitiemphasized the importance of continuing information and medical education activities: “We also have activities for teaching medical offices and equipment […]. Plus, this week I am meeting with the doctor of family medicine, who is coming to Căcuciu, she even took the Residency exam, the third specialization, and we are having meetings to come and bring another doctor.

President of the Divers Association, Maria Koreckemphasized the educational and entertainment efforts of the project: “Now we are here, with the Ariel Theatre, because what we have learned about oral hygiene needs to be supported a little and thus more fun, and then the Ariel Theater from Târgu-Mureș brought us a play in which the protagonists are made of onions, cabbage, lettuce, and this I think it will leave deeper educational traces than what we said during the classes we took that oral hygiene campaign to.

The mayor of Beica de Jos commune, Maria Moldovanhighlighted the importance of commitment to community health: “It is a great achievement, if until now I have taken care of the elderly, the sick, on the health side it is also the turn of the young, the children to be with them. […] We will continue, I want to be with them as much as I can, these wonderful children and these people.

After the official end of the project, a schedule of monthly outreach and prevention activities will be maintained, thus ensuring that the commitment to community health remains constant and sustainable.
