Google is strengthening the security of its users’ accounts by simplifying the process of enabling two-factor authentication (2FA), a recently announced change that aims to add an extra layer of security. The new methodology eliminates the need for SMS-based authentication, known for its vulnerabilities, and encourages the use of authentication applications or hardware security keys.

This change is essential especially in the current context, where the security of personal data is becoming more and more critical. Google recommends using its own application, Google Authenticator, or other equivalent applications that generate time-based one-time passwords (TOTP). This is good news for organizations that already use these methods, as the process becomes simpler and more secure.

Users with hardware security keys now have additional options for integrating them with their Google Accounts. These include registering a FIDO1 credential on the hardware key or assigning a FIDO2 credential, which allows passwordless authentication, of course depending on each organization’s administration policies.

Google has seen an impressive increase in the number of accounts using passkeys, with more than 400 million Google Accounts enabling passwordless login in the past year. This indicates a clear trend towards adopting more robust security methods capable of resisting phishing and session hijacking attacks.

Modern authentication methods such as FIDO2 use cryptographic keys generated by and connected to users’ devices to provide identity verification. They provide a secure alternative to traditional authentication methods, which can be easily compromised by credential harvesting techniques or malware attacks.

Another notable aspect of the new update is that users who decide to disable 2FA in their account settings will no longer automatically have their two-step verification option removed. This is a measure to keep security options active to protect users even in scenarios where 2FA is temporarily disabled to facilitate certain administrative processes.

Google thus continues its efforts to provide its users with a safe and reliable platform, constantly adapting to new cyber security challenges. This latest update not only simplifies security procedures, but also strengthens them, laying the foundation for a more secure digital environment for all its users.
