Nintendo has confirmed that it is working on its next console, the successor to the Switch. Company president Shuntaro Furukawa made the announcement on Nintendo’s official account on the X Network, but the details he provided were few. We’ve already known that a Switch 2 has been in production for a while in the company’s labs, but we expected to know something about the new console by now. Unfortunately, Furukawa confirms that details will come later, probably closer to launch.

I’m Furukawa, the president of Nintendo. We will make an announcement about the successor to the Nintendo Switch console later this fiscal year. It’s already been over nine years since we announced the existence of the Nintendo Switch console in March 2015. We’ll be holding a Nintendo Direct in June regarding the list of software for the Nintendo Switch in the second half of 2024, but please note that no the successor to the Nintendo Switch console will be mentioned during the presentation.

In fact, we don’t know yet if Nintendo will try to continue in the direction of “Switch”, or if it will adopt another concept with another name. Rumors so far state that Nintendo’s next console will retain the idea of a hybrid console that can be connected to a TV but can also be taken anywhere for portable use.
The deadline for the Nintendo Switch 2 “reveal” is the end of March 2025, which is the end of the company’s 2024 fiscal year.
On this occasion, Furukawa also confirmed that there will be a “Nintendo Direct” live broadcast during the time when the recently canceled “E3” gaming fair was traditionally held for the 2024 edition (and probably forever). In this online event, Nintendo will announce new games for the second half of the year, but these games will also be dedicated to the Nintendo Switch “1” console, the one we already have on the market. The company’s president says that the successor to the Switch will not be mentioned during this presentation.
The Nintendo Switch was originally confirmed in March 2015. At the time, there was talk of a “successor” to the Nintendo Wii U. The console was only revealed in the fall of 2016, and the market launch didn’t happen until the end of March since 2017. Most likely, though, the Nintendo Switch 2 won’t have such a long release cycle.
It is rumored that the new console will also be based on hardware from NVIDIA, with ARM chipset and GPU based on GeForce technologies. Thus, compatibility with the Switch 1 will be guaranteed, with the games of the original console being able to run directly on the new model. A major performance boost is also expected, but that would bring the console more in line with the PlayStation 4/Xbox One generation, rather than the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X models. At the heart of the graphical improvements could be AI DLSS upscaling technology, which could allow “Switch 2” games to run even in 4K resolution.
