INTERCEPTIONS. Priest Silaghi allegedly admitted to touching two minors. “I gave them money and that’s it”

--

Some teachers from the centers in Satu Mare have SUSPECTEDLY SILENT regarding the case of the two institutionalized children, whom the prosecutors say were abused by the priest from Satmare, Dorel Silaghi. That’s why one of the minors (16 years old) threatened to go to the police himself. The prosecutor obtained a warrant to intercept the phone of priest Silaghi. He was recorded saying on the phone that he fondled “Two Babies from the Orphanage” in their private parts.

Priest Augustin Dorel Silaghi (60 years old), parish priest of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in the municipality of Satu Mare was a regular at the centers subordinated to the General Directorate of Social Assistance and Child Protection (DGASPC). He also took the two minors from these centers. The situation is all the more serious as at least one of the minors also has a moderate degree of disability.

“The priest brought him to the center by car, and after he left, the minor went to the playroom where the other children were and told them that the priest touched his penis, but only one child believed him. It was not believed by the teachers either. The minor also stated that he was emotionally affected after this event, especially since no one believed him. He cried with him in the room, in addition, the priest was also at the center and asked him to go with him, but the minor refused”, the indictment of the prosecutor of the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Satu Mare District Court states.

The second alleged victim of priest Silaghi ran two kilometers – say the investigators – from the Church on Botizului Street in Satu Mare to the center from where she left. When he arrived at the center he was very agitated, scared and tired. Red in the face from the effort and barely breathing, the boy told the two teachers what happened to him at church. The two educators did not believe the minor, although he was visibly very affected.

DGASPC Satu Mare notified the police about this case on January 29, six days after what happened to the second minor in the church. Prosecutors decided on February 6 to monitor the priest’s phone calls.

It appears from the interceptions in the file that the priest Silaghi would admit his deeds. In the first interception, he talks to an individual who would provide him with certain services at the property he owns:

Priest “I might fail the polygraph test”

Gentleman: And is it true that you got hold of that boy?

Priest Silaghi: Yes!

Sir: Really?!

Priest Silaghi: Yes… it’s just that I touched him, nothing else.

Gentleman: About stupidity, or?

Priest Silaghi: Hey!

Sir: When did you go to the center there?

Priest Silaghi: No.

Sir: Then?

Priest Silaghi: Here at church…

Gentleman: ‘Get your head’ my…

Priest Silaghi: Very true…

Priest: I swear and swear that I didn’t do anything. But… it’s true that I proposed to them. And she said “No” and that’s it! I gave them money and that’s it! Each one a house!

Gentleman: Well… Yes, yes, do you know what you declared to the Police?

Priest: That is not true.

Sir: Very good!

Priest Silaghi: M…yes. Now tomorrow… I might fail the polygraph test. Now I see that my wife called me again. I don’t know what to say to him…where did I disappear, where did I go, where did I stay so long…

Sir: Can’t we run somewhere together? Get rid of it all!

Priest Silaghi: No!

Sir: Why? That you don’t want!

Priest Silaghi: It’s worse!

In the second wiretap he appears to be talking to his son. And from this interception, it seems that the priest acknowledges the facts of which he is accused:

Priest Silaghi: I have serious problems. I don’t know how I’m going to tell her.

Sir: Huh?

Priest Silaghi: Two minors accuse me of sexually abusing them.

Sir: Damn it?!

Sir: I don’t think so! Well, who are they?!

Priest Silaghi: Tomorrow morning I’m going to the Polygraph.

Sir: And who are they?

Priest Silaghi: Two babies from the Children’s Home

Sir: You have my p..!

Priest Silaghi: No one knows, including you.

Sir: Listen to me! The two of us are talking: Did you… have, did you make a gesture or do something that could possibly indicate this?

Priest Silaghi: I touched the bird with my hand, that’s all.

Sir: (pause) Yes by mistake or…?

Priest Silaghi: That’s it..

Gentleman: Oh my gosh! No! You have to…

Priest Silaghi: Yes, it wasn’t that much. Nothing further! I just gave them money to buy chocolate, candies… a hundred lei each.

Sir: No, that’s it! You have my p..! Uh… What to do?! What to do at the POLYGRAPH?! What to do?! You can’t lie! You can’t lie that… you’re just getting into the actual c…t! Um…Talk to a lawyer, no! I’m talking (he stammers) he’s talking to a lawyer!(…)”

That same evening, priest Silaghi called the police and informed them that he no longer wanted to take the polygraph test for which he had given his consent.

Sent to court for sexual assault, priest Silaghi – through his lawyer Răzvan Doseanu – contested the investigation, citing procedural flaws and violation of the right to defense. He also denied the allegations.

“The way of presenting the facts is strictly limited to stating in the content of the indictment at the sentence level the fact that the inappropriate gestures of the defendant occurred against the background of moral coercion and taking advantage of the impossibility of the injured persons to express their will. Both normative variants of committing the act must be explained from a factual point of view”, is the defense formulated by Răzvan Doseanu in court.
