a survey carried out by IRES in March shows that 1 in 3 Romanians questioned is worried that our country could be involved in a military conflict in the future, while 44% of the men interviewed stated that they would not enlist in the army in the event of a NATO- Russia, but that they will stay in the country. On the other hand, 38% of them would join the army to defend Romania.

The people participating in the study believe that the technical equipment of the army and the military personnel are at an average level, with a score of 5.2 and 5.9, respectively, on a scale from 1 to 10.

Romanians’ concerns increase the idea of ​​equipping the army for defense

In the context of the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia on Romania’s border, 72% of the Romanians who took part in the survey agree that the state should allocate more money to the defense industry. On the other hand, 68% of them believe that the budget should be allocated mainly for the technical equipment of the army.

The army – mandatory or not?

IRES shows that 44% of the Romanians who participated in the study believe that it is better for the army to be mandatory. However, more than half of the respondents (54%) are of the opinion that the army should be based on volunteers, in order for it to be professional.

Romania’s membership in NATO is a good thing

The study was carried out on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Romania becoming a member of the North Atlantic Alliance, and over 80% of respondents believe that our country’s entry into NATO is a good thing and that Romania benefits from greater defense through membership in the Alliance.

However, 59% of the Romanian respondents are of the opinion that our country’s relationship with Russia has started to deteriorate gradually since joining NATO, and for 51% of them, Romania’s status as a member of the Alliance comes with the need to to spend more money on defense.

At the same time, 82% of the people interviewed are convinced that Romania will be defended by NATO in case it is attacked, and 62% of them believe that the presence of NATO soldiers on Romanian territory makes the country safer.

The study was carried out between March 24-27, 2024, on a sample of 1058 people over the age of 18, with a different level of education and from several regions of the country.
