Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz has scheduled a visit to Romania for Saturday, according to the agenda published on the German government’s website, News.ro reports.

In Bucharest, he will be received by Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu for discussions, the German Chancellery mentions. “Discussions will focus, among others, on bilateral, security and economic policy issues,” states Berlin.

The federal chancellor will then participate in a round table with representatives of the business environment.

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, whose parties are part of the same European political family, had an informal meeting last November in Malaga, where the congress of European socialists took place.

“Romania has in the chancellor of Germany a friend and a supporter of our country’s accession to the Schengen area. We are confident that together with Germany we can build a stronger, united and fair Europe”, wrote Marcel Ciolacu on the X network at the time, along with photos of him walking and having lunch with the head of the German government.

The German Chancellor’s visit to Romania comes in the context of Europe preparing for the June elections. On Wednesday, the President of the European Council Charles Michel, the Prime Minister of Belgium Alexander De Croo, the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia, Andrej Plenković, came to Bucharest, who were received at the Cotroceni Palace by the President Klaus Iohannis, to have consultations regarding the Strategic Agenda of the European Union.
