“Okay, we’ve entered Schengen. They’re checking everyone’s passports! Nice, right? France! Schengen, but not really!”. There are images filmed by MEP Vlad Gheorghe at the Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, where the French border police checked the passports of all the Romanians arriving by plane. Entering the air Schengen area should have exempted us from these controls.
- Vlad Gheorghe, MEP: I asked them if they do random checks and they failed to tell me! They said they check Germany and other countries too! They said that their superiors tell them where to go!
It is not a singular case. And other Romanians claim the same situation at other European airports.
– They controlled everything. Normal, as usual.
– Didn’t you feel that we are in Schengen?
– Not
– Do you know why? Why did they choose you?
– Not us, all of us!
– The whole plane?
– Yes, we were all checked!
– What airport are you coming from?
– From Bari!
– Did they check your bulletins, passports?
– Yes! Three times!
Amsterdam, Oslo, Malmo, Munich, Copenhagen or Berlin are other airports where Romanians complain that Air Schengen does not exist.
In the Schengen area, police checks at airports should be based on risk analyses
- Cristi Popovici, Observer reporter: Random checks of travel documents are made at airports and after the date of official entry into the Schengen area. Practically, the Romanian border authorities or from other countries will be able to request the documents of persons considered suspicious, which they will then check in the databases of common IT systems.
At least in Romania the controls have disappeared. The Romanian authorities have not yet commented on the situation that Romanians go through in airports abroad.
