16 cities from Romania have joined the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40) coalition. This is an ambitious project that aims to combat climate change, but also the environment.

What are these cities? It is about Aiud, Alba Iulia, Bîrlad, Botoșani, Brașov, Buzău, Câmpina, Cluj Napoca, Constanța, Iași, Lugoj, Moinești, Petroșani, Pitesti, Suceava and Tulcea.

The authorities here are ready to change the way of life of the inhabitants and adopt more sustainable practices. What obligations do the cities in Romania that joined the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40) coalition have and why will the residents no longer consume meat and dairy?

This coalition primarily aims to drastically reduce the use of cars. At the same time, it is desired to promote sustainable consumption, and among other things, the elimination of meat and dairy consumption.

Rules from the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40) coalition

The C40 coalition was initially made up of 100 cities. Later, however, more than 1,000 other cities around the globe joined this movement and have big goals until 2030.

In order for things to be really like that, C40 also imposed a series of mandatory rules. Thus, in all the previously mentioned Romanian cities, but also in the rest of the cities that have joined the coalition, the inhabitants will no longer consume meat and dairy products.

One rule clearly states that it is “0 kg meat” and “0 kg dairy”. Among other things, the regulation also mentions the reduction to “3 new items of clothing per person per year”.

Regarding traffic and pollution, the elimination of private vehicles is being considered. The exception is one short-haul flight, i.e. less than 1,500 km, every 3 years per person. And all these objectives were set out in the report “The Future of Urban Consumption in a 1.5°C World”, originally published in 2019 and reaffirmed in 2023.

We mention that through these rules, although strict at first glance, C40 plans to save the planet. The reforms aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 50% in 2030.
