The declaration adopted in the Romanian Parliament: ” (…) Romania will continue to strengthen its defense capabilities based on a comprehensive security concept, in order to maintain the rules-based international order. We will maintain our determination and commitment to defend all Allies against all threats, whatever their source. We will also continue to meet all our obligations to develop our own defense capability as an integral part of our Washington Treaty commitments. Romania will continue to act, in a coherent and predictable manner, based on the three defining elements of its foreign and security policy: membership in NATO and the European Union and the Strategic Partnership with the United States of America. At the same time, Romania will intensify its efforts to strengthen NATO cooperation with the European Union, with the aim of increasing the efficiency of the two organizations’ actions and mutual support.

20 years after Romania’s accession to NATO, we honor the memory of the Romanian soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of democracy, freedom and human rights, in missions carried out under the NATO flag.

Their sacrifice will always remain in our memory, and through our efforts to defend the Alliance and, implicitly, the national territory, we will carry on their memory.

At the same time, we reiterate our deep respect for all those who participated in the missions assumed by Romania within NATO and we thank them for their loyal and honorable service.

Romania’s membership in NATO represents a guarantee of the protection of Romanian citizens, which continues to overwhelmingly support the decisive role of NATO in the contemporary security environment. NATO membership also represents a factor in the stability of the national edifice, including in the democratic development and economic prosperity of the Romanian society.

At this anniversary moment, when we celebrate the advantages of belonging to the most successful political-military organization in history, we also think about our duty to support the continuation of the project of expanding the area of ​​​​values ​​and security in the Euro-Atlantic area, which has brought so many benefits to Romania in the last 20 years.

It is our responsibility to continue to support Ukraine to maintain its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of the Russian aggressor and to support the legitimate aspirations of other vulnerable states in our neighborhood, such as the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, to live in democracy, security and prosperity. In an ever-changing security context,

Romania will continue to be NATO’s defense outpost against any threats to Allied territory, respecting the commitments assumed and making constant efforts to defend the common values ​​that constitute NATO’s keystone: democracy, individual freedoms, respect for human rights and the rule of law. This declaration was adopted by the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate in the joint session of April 2, 2024, on the occasion of the solemn session dedicated to marking the 20th anniversary of Romania’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance and the 75th anniversary of NATO’s existence”.
