A man and a woman were detained by the police in Iași after allegedly circulating counterfeit 100 lei banknotes, buying goods of low value from several companies. As a result of some searches made in this file, 61 such banknotes were found, there being suspicions that they were put into circulation in several counties.

According to the Romanian Police, the police officers of the Iasi Organized Crime Brigade, together with those of the Central National Office for Combating Counterfeit Currency and the Cluj-Napoca Organized Crime Brigade, under the coordination of the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Iasi District Court, implemented 5 home search warrants, in Maramureş County, in a criminal case for circulation of counterfeit values ​​and fraud.

“From the investigations it emerged that, between August 18 and August 20, 2023, a man and a woman would have appeared, alternatively, at several commercial companies in Iaşi County, who would have circulated counterfeit banknotes, from 100 lei, made on a plastic support, the mode of operation indicating that the people sought to maximize the profit resulting from the circulation of counterfeit banknotes, by purchasing products of relatively low value”, the quoted source said.

As a result of the searches, 61 counterfeit 100 lei banknotes were discovered, and these were seized in order to continue the investigations.

Also, in the case, there are suspicions that the investigated persons would have circulated counterfeit banknotes from the 100 lei bill, made on a plastic support, in other counties as well, the investigations being continued to establish the entire situation.

On Tuesday, the two people under investigation were detained for 24 hours, to be presented to the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Iasi District Court, with legal proposals.

Specialized support was provided by the Special Operations Directorate of the Romanian Police.

The action benefited from the support of the policemen of the Maramureş County Police Inspectorate and the gendarmes from the Maramureş County Gendarmerie Inspectorate.
