The Social Democratic Party aims to implement the European minimum wage in Romania by the end of 2024. The Social Democrats also want to find a sustainable method for increasing the minimum wage in Romania every year.

In fact, the European Parliament adopted a Directive on the minimum wage and the minimum pension in the European Union, two years ago, Thus, the minimum wage should represent 60% of the average gross wage. Also, through this Directive, periodic indexing is required to ensure that salary levels remain up to date

According to Euronews.com, the EU Minimum Wage Directive must enter into force by November 15, 2024.

Therefore, the 21 member states of the EU bloc that have statutory minimum wages must guarantee that the money earned will allow people to lead a decent life, and from the moment it enters into force (October 2022), member countries have two years to transpose its provisions into local legislation.

“The increase in the minimum salary to 3,700 lei, announced by Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu for July 1, 2024, will raise salary income to the appropriate level for the introduction of the automatic salary increase mechanism, according to the provisions of the European Directive. The PSD believes that any positive effect in the economy must also be reflected in the salary incomes of the citizens”, PSD transmitted.

Many Romanians do not even earn the equivalent of 1000 euros per month

European statistics show that Romanians (with or without higher education, qualified for the positions they hold) do not even earn the equivalent of 1000 euros per month.

More precisely, our state ranks among the last countries in the European Union in terms of minimum salary, in 20th place out of 22, with a salary of just over 600 euros, just ahead of Hungary and Bulgaria. There are six countries with a minimum wage above 1,500 euros. These are Luxembourg, Belgium (€1,842), Ireland (€1,775), the Netherlands (€1,756), Germany (€1,744) and France (€1,646).
