GSP writes the story of several of the registered fencers in Romania who migrated outside the country, either with sports scholarships, merit scholarships or at the expense of their families. Together with 6 of them, we analyzed the differences in mentality – how athletes are viewed in countries with a solid education system compared to how they are treated and integrated in Romania.

The conclusion is a worrying one for Romanian sport.
Young people thus follow the trend of their colleagues from other disciplines who had the chance to study abroad – for example, in basketball or swimming.
Leaving from state or private clubs, one of the categories of fencers who chose to continue their university education outside of Romania is made up of those who received sports scholarships following exceptional results obtained as cadets or juniors, at the level international.
None of them regret having taken the step towards education in a country other than Romania, although some of them are thinking of returning home after completing their studies. Some of them will focus on the professional advantages offered by the school abroad, while others are animated by the Olympic dream – even if they live and train in another country, they want to represent Romania.
