“We are preparing seven new security documents for our country, bilateral security agreements, in particular, the security agreement with the United States of America, armaments, finances, political cooperation. Today I worked with the team on the specific details of these documents, and for some of them we already have a preliminary text of the agreements”, President Zelenski announced.

The Ukrainian president specified that each of them will support our security architecture this year and in the following years until we join NATO.

“We complement the draft agreements with stronger opportunities for Ukraine and for our common security with our partners. It is clear that a special priority is given to everything that will provide more protection against Russian terror”, added the Ukrainian president.

Ukraine has bilateral security agreements with nine countries

To date, Ukraine has signed bilateral security agreements with nine countries, including France, the United Kingdom and Finland, the most recent being Latvia. An agreement with Norway is also expected to be signed.

These agreements are essentially promises by these countries to continue providing long-term military and financial support to Ukraine against Russian invasion.

Kiev believes that the conclusion of these bilateral security agreements – a compromise solution suggested by the G7 at last year’s NATO summit in Vilnius – helps Ukraine resist large-scale Russian aggression.

Romania, which helps train Ukrainian pilots for the F-16, is also preparing to conclude such a security agreement with Kiev, President Klaus Iohannis announced last month.

On the other hand, Zelensky told the Ukrainians, in the speech on Wednesday evening, that together with Switzerland, the last details were worked out for the summit where Kiev hopes to bring as many countries as possible to convince Moscow to make peace.

“We are preparing the global summit for peace, the first such summit that can start a real movement towards a just peace. Together with the Swiss side, today we agreed on the final touches and we are working as much as possible to ensure that as many leaders and countries as possible will participate in the summit. This is fundamental. The world can stop any aggressor. If they act in unity and in accordance with the rules of the majority, no aggression will withstand a truly global pressure. And we must all work together to force Russia to make peace. In the coming weeks, a lot of work will be done behind the scenes with partners to make the summit truly meaningful,” Zelenskiy explained.
