Mihail Diaconescu, a physicist, stated that two causes of the earthquakes that had their epicenter in Gorj were established: a local cause – as a result of the existence of some local faults in a pre-tensioned area on the curvature of the Carpathians; an external cause – influences due to earthquakes in Turkey, especially the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in southern Turkey.

“In terms of the cause, and it’s true that in the first two weeks we weren’t very firm in having a clear opinion, but it took us a period where we had to assimilate what was happening and assimilate some patterns. The first model referred to local causes, as a result of the existence of some local faults in a pre-stressed area on the curvature of the Carpathians, which is not a map, but means some rocks molded according to an arc of a circle that starts in the area of the northern Gorge and end in the Balkans. External causes are influences due to earthquakes in Turkey, especially the 7.8 earthquake in southern Turkey whose energy propagated on the subduction plane of the African plate, under the eastern European plate along the Cypriot subduction arc, the Greek, influencing the movement of the Adriatic microplate. These were the final straw for the Târgu Jiu area, which produced this sequence so prolific in producing earthquakes.

4,200 earthquakes occurred last year in Gorj county.
