The urban train, which should connect Şelimbăr and the Airport, via Sibiu, is one of the major projects that have been discussed for many years. It won’t become a reality anytime soon, and that’s because the project has stalled at the Ministry of Transport.
Astrid Fodor, the mayor of Sibiu, stated, on Thursday, during the launch conference of the FDGR candidates for this year’s local elections, that the urban train project does not depend only on the local administration. The municipality has taken the necessary steps to implement the project, everything now depends on the Ministry of Transport.
“It is a main project even now, but there are projects that depend exclusively on the administration, you want them, you prepare the papers, but others depend on other state authorities. We are waiting for the decision of the Ministry of Transport, whether money will be allocated for such a thing or not. We concluded a protocol with them and there we are. Further, I can’t answer you, because I don’t have the answer either. We are in constant contact (…) there are projects that far exceed the capacity of a UAT and that depend on collaboration with other factors”, said Astrid Fodor.
At the beginning of 2021, the first concrete steps were taken towards the implementation of the urban train that would connect Şelimbăr to the Airport via Sibiu. A study was carried out to see what the established route would be, depending on the traffic indicators on this axis, and the study was subsequently submitted to the Ministry of Transport. Since then, nothing concrete has happened.
