A 20-meter landslide occurred in a neighborhood of Cluj-Napoca. Initially, the authorities paved the cracks that appeared on the road in the hope that they would stop the phenomenon, but the solution did not work. Access to the area is now restricted. No more cars are allowed to circuit on the street.

Calls to 112 started pouring in last night, close to midnight. People announced that a large hole had formed on Uliului Street. They were desperate because they had noticed some cracks during the day. Only in the morning did they understand the scale of the disaster.

Even more alarming is the fact that problems with the stability of the terrain are known, with the road also having cracks in other sections. Residents of the houses and blocks built here in recent years are horrified by the situation they sensed would happen someday.

It is an unpleasant situation because the authorities did not organize themselves, it was obvious that the road was being damaged and closed, but we were not notified. When they built the adduction, we saw that the work was superficial because the rings from the chimney were placed directly on the ground, and you can see that it slipped. There was another slide, it’s true, that one was consolidated, but because of the water that pooled here too, there was a reason that there was a well here that collects the water from the hillsaid a local.

Locals now fear that, in case of an emergency, ambulances or fire trucks cannot enter the street.

This is shocking, the lack of reaction of the authorities, we are lucky that it is not raining today, but what happens in the following days, asks a local.

ISU inspectors partially closed traffic in the neighborhood for fear that the slide may spread. However, there are plenty of risks. There are water, sewage and gas networks in the area. Cluj-Napoca City Hall requested that geotechnical studies be done before repairs are made. But no one knows how long they will last.

Iulia Perșa, spokeswoman for Cluj-Napoca City Hall: A team from the City Hall went there. An expertise will be done to know what we need to do for consolidation, and after the expertise, the authorization is issued and we do emergency work.

The authorities are now looking for solutions so that traffic can resume, but detouring on a forest road. Until then, those who live in the area will go… on foot.

It is the second such incident after the one in Prahova, from Slănic, where a large portion of a street in the city collapsed, and people from nearby blocks were evacuated, fearing that the collapse would expand and reach under buildings.
