Veterinary inspectors claim that commercial chickens are not contaminated

The deputy executive director of DSVSA Mureș, Lucian Goga, told Radio Tg. Mureș that the inspectors are these days checking both the chicken farms and the Sânpaul slaughterhouse, the only authorized one in the county, after the statements made by the president of the National Authority for Consumer Protection.

Horia Constantinescu warned against the commercialization of chicken meat that has an artificially yellow color, stating that the result would have been obtained after feeding the birds with grains containing certain substances.

The role of DSV is to guarantee that what is exposed for sale is safe and does not endanger the health of the population, says director Lucian Goga:

Inspectors check both feed quality, growth, welfare conditions of chickens for meat until slaughter, including ante-mortem examination, examination during slaughter, carcass examination after slaughter. And in the only poultry slaughterhouse in the county, we have two veterinarians, present during the entire working period. There are dyes that can be legally administered in bird feed, this does not mean that the farmer adds the dyes or does anything! There are authorized practicing veterinarians, with which chicken breeding farms have a contract, there are registers of consultations and treatments in which any drug treatment is highlighted, as well as any vaccination.

Following the checks, the representatives of the Brașov Regional Commissioner for Consumer Protection sent today the collected samples from three counties to the laboratories in Iași and Bucharest, and the results will be published in a few days, explained Chief Commissioner Onica Csaba:

I sent to two laboratories, in Iași and Bucharest, which only received them this morning. Those samples were taken from Mureș, Brașov and Alba counties. However, we cannot say that there is a suspicion of Salmonella contamination. Considering the information circulating in the mass media, we thought it would be good to do analyzes and we will see the results of the analysis reports. Until we reach the deadline and have the conclusions, I cannot say whether our assumption is true or not.

Yesterday, the ANPC management warned that it is possible that some chickens on the shelf have an unnatural color, due to the dyes that would be put in the food, and the representatives of the National Sanitary and Veterinary Authority replied that the chicken meat in Romanian stores is safe.
