In the country with the most road accidents in Europe, roller separators could save dozens of lives annually. The network extends to the most dangerous roads in the country. The system consists of rollers that, in the event of an impact, rotate and push the cars back onto the road.

The roller guardrail is currently installed in areas with a high risk of accidents, on DN1, between Braşov and Făgăraş, and DN13, between Braşov and Sighisoara. The boomerang effect can make the difference between life and death. Cars out of control end up being thrown back onto the road. And the system is made to withstand impact with TIRs, say the builders.

Low damage, and the impact is not violent

Sorin Sasu, project manager: This innovative system consists of pillars, which are inserted one meter deep, in the embankment, at a distance of one meter. Intermediate, between them, another supporting pole, in which the rollers are placed.

Tudor Duțu, director of DRDP Brașov: The car is brought back on the track, due to the fact that these plastic barrels make it ricochet. The cars have less damage and the impact is not as violent as with the metal parapet.

In the area, some curves have been fenced since last year.

Claudiu Loghin, Observer reporter: I say that we are on DN1, in a particularly dangerous curve to the left, on the direction of travel from Brașov to Predeal. It’s one of the places where the parapet has proven effective. The wheels spin, we actually have a chip stuck here, and the vehicle stays on the road instead of going into the chasm behind the guardrail.

Local: There have been a lot of accidents. However, it’s ok, don’t jump into the ravine. It is a very good thing.

One meter of separator costs around 3,500 lei

The authorities’ plan is to install another three kilometers of parapets on the roads in Brasov County.

Tudor Duțu, director of DRDP Brașov: So far this year we have installed 1,200 linear meters on DN1 and DN13 in Bogăţii forest. On this sector, between Predeal and Cotul Donului, we are installing another 1,700 linear meters.

Such systems began to be installed here five years ago, at the exit from Bucharest towards Târgovişte and on the E85, nicknamed the Road of Death. Romania ranks first in Europe in the number of road accidents. Over 70 accidents take place on the country’s roads every day.
