a single patient enters and sleeps. Epilepsy Research Center

--

Dr. Ioana Mîndruță, primary care neurologist, opened in Sibiu, one day before the International Day of the Fight against Epilepsy, known worldwide as “Purple Day”, a unique office in the country. One in which long-term monitoring and recording of patients with epilepsy or suspected epilepsy is carried out.

Sibiu is a city that is dear to us

Ioana Mândruță is the wife of the journalist Lucian Mândruță, both known as great amateurs of bicycle trips around the county. The location of the city in the center of the country, with access to the highway, but also the familiarity with the places and people contributed to the decision to organize this office here.

“These investigations were available until now in our clinic in Bucharest, and the benefits that patients enjoy are notable. We wanted these investigations to be more accessible to patients from all regions of the country.

Sibiu, being located in the center of the country, means that the distances traveled by patients from areas far from Bucharest are shorter and the effort of travel is reduced. At the same time, by opening this new center, more patients have the chance to be monitored in the shorter term. Sibiu is a city that is dear to us, both for the beauty of the area surrounded by mountains, the fresh air, and for the energy of the place and the warm and balanced people”, said Ioana Mîndruță.

The staff that will work in the new clinic in Sibiu was trained in Bucharest.

“As a primary care neurologist, university lecturer, with skills in epileptology and somnology, video EEG (video-electroencephalography) and PSG (polysomnography) investigations, as well as pre-surgical evaluation in epilepsy surgery, I am happy to announce that I have opened a center in Sibiu private in which long-term monitoring and recording is carried out through high-performance technology of patients with epilepsy or suspicion of epilepsy. The records are useful for diagnosis and treatment, as well as for the selection of treatment-resistant cases through the National Program.

In this type of investigation it is important that the patient feels at home in the monitoring center. We pay attention to this aspect in all the details, starting with the quiet residential area where we chose to open the practice, continuing with the arrangement of the space in a warm and welcoming way and very important was the selection of the staff involved in the medical procedures.

We have a team of professional, dedicated people who have been specialized through training sessions.

I looked for and found here people with solid moral values and with adequate medical education, I trained them through training sessions in the center in Bucharest, and now they have the capacity and technical skills to operate on the high-performance equipment with which the center is equipped”, stated Ioana Mîndruță.

On Monday, March 25, the first patient was also scheduled.

“Today (not yesterday) the first registration is already scheduled, we have the first patient. For each patient it is an individual treatment, he will be alone in the clinic, quietly under the permanent supervision of a dedicated medical staff, a specialized EEG technician who performs the investigation”, stated the doctor.

“It’s an expensive investigation, but it’s much more accessible than those done abroad”

The patient comes here to sleep, basically.

“The patient is discussed, the file is presented, the electrodes are mounted, the procedure is explained to the patient, and then he is connected to the recording device. This is the standard protocol, after which the patient is left to sleep. It is very important that they feel good, because during sleep, if it is quality, we manage to get the best data. In a hospital setting, all these factors are difficult to achieve and patients are very tense and sleep is hard to come by.

The patient comes to our center where prolonged video electroencephalographic monitoring is performed, with a variable duration, depending on the specifics of the case. Basically, he stays here for a longer period of time, connected to the machines, is followed by the medical team to observe the typical changes in the clinical form of the disease.

Sometimes, during the investigation, we can obtain a seizure with an electrical recording and a clinical, visual one, that is, we have a chance to carefully observe the patient’s behavior during the seizure.

After this investigation, the data is analyzed and we can establish a treatment, a personalized medication or even surgical interventions that lead to healing. It is an expensive investigation, but it is much more accessible than those done abroad. In the Clinic in Sibiu, as in the center in Bucharest with the same profile, the information obtained from these complex investigations is precisely integrated by a team of doctors with special training in epilepsy.

This diagnostic procedure is not covered by compulsory insurances, but extended videoEEG recordings may be covered by private insurances. The data obtained represent an important stage in the diagnosis of epilepsy and in differentiating it from other conditions, as well as in tracking the response to treatment”, Ioana Mîndruță also said.

Patients with drug-resistant epilepsy can have this investigation through the national program, in which case all these procedures are cleared. These cases are managed in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit at Bucharest University Hospital.
