Seven fires of dry vegetation in the last hours

The Giurgiu firefighters were on duty 24 hours a day for the immediate intervention to citizens’ requests and the optimal management of emergency situations, produced at the local level. In the last hours, they intervened to extinguish seven fires, in the following localities:

  • Giurgiu, on Farm Road – about 100 square meters of dry vegetation and about 100 kg of household waste burned;
  • Tree (two interventions) – approximately 600 square meters of dry vegetation, shoots and household waste burned;
  • Carthaginians – they burned dry vegetation and rushes, on an area of approximately 6,000 square meters;
  • A 1, in the area of Florești-Stoenești – they burned dry vegetation and saplings, on an area of approximately 2,500 square meters;
  • Hulubesti – they burned dry vegetation and brushwood, on an area of about 10 ha;
  • Copaceni Assemblies – burned dry vegetation, on an area of about one ha.

Firefighters from the Giurgiu and Bolintin Deal Detachments, the Mihăilești Station, the Roata de Jos Intervention Guard and the Călugăreni Work Point acted to extinguish these fires, with eight special vehicles.
The fires were caused by open fires left unattended or by smoking in places not properly protected.
According to environmental protection legislation, it is forbidden to burn stubble, peat bogs, forest litter, reeds, scrub or grassy vegetation.
Thus, citizens must comply with the provisions of Emergency Ordinance no. 195 of 2005 on environmental protection, with subsequent amendments and additions. According to this normative act, the owners and holders of land with title or without title have the obligation not to burn and to prevent the burning of stubble, peatlands, forest litter, reeds, thickets or grassy vegetation. Non-compliance with these legal provisions constitutes a contravention and is sanctioned with a fine from 7,500 lei to 15,000 lei for natural persons, and from 50,000 lei to 100,000 lei for legal entities.
We draw attention to the fact that the use of open fire for land sanitation, burning garbage, waste and other combustible materials can have serious consequences, both on the environment and on property or even people’s lives. In such cases, flames can quickly spread over a large area, and in windy conditions dry vegetation or household waste fires can become even more dangerous if they occur close to homes, power grids or places with explosion hazard.
We advise smokers not to throw cigarette butts haphazardly (e.g. on the car window) as they can set fire to dry roadside vegetation or trees, and fires can spread to property or, in the worst cases, cause casualties.
