Zelenskiy’s request for additional defense systems comes just days after the US Congress approved a $61 billion aid package for Ukraine.

On the other hand, on Friday the Pentagon announced that it will buy new weapons worth 6 billion dollars for Ukraine, including interceptors for the Patriot defense system, writes Reuters.

“This year, Russian planes have already used more than 9,000 guided bombs against Ukraine, and we need the ability to shoot down aerial combat aircraft so that they do not approach our positions and borders,” Zelensky said at the start of a meeting led by the United States to help arm Ukraine, meeting known as the Ukraine Contact Group.

“While we were waiting for a decision on American support, the Russian army managed to take the initiative on the battlefield,” said Zelenski. “We can, from now on, not only stabilize the front, but also advance in achieving our objectives in the war,” he added.

After the meeting, the US Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, said that the Patriot missile defense system itself would not be a “silver bullet” for Kiev, but rather a solution in its integration with other missile defense systems.

For its part, the Spanish Ministry of Defense said that Madrid will deliver Patriot anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine, following pressure from NATO allies and the European Union to send more military aid to Kiev.
