Do you like van Gogh or Picasso? A Romanian named Carina Popovici used Artificial Intelligence technology to identify fake paintings on the online art market.
Among the 40 fakes found on Ebay is a painting by Monet, called “Forest With a Stream”, which costs more than 550 thousand euros, The Guardian writes. Another painting has the name of Renoir, with a price of over 150 thousand euros. “We do not allow counterfeit items or unauthorized copies to be listed,” is eBay’s response. But the art specialist says that the paintings analyzed on their website are 95% fake.
The company did not respond to Popovici’s emails urging it to take the matter seriously, but did provide a statement to UK media.
“We use multiple AI technologies, trained investigators and buyer protection programs. Ebay blocked 88 million suspicious items in 2022, and removed 1.3 million items from the platform. In this case, we have already removed one of the articles that was reported to us,” the platform says.
The Romanian says that in the past it was very difficult to spot a fake painting, because you can’t take samples from an image on the Internet. But with the new technology, you download an image and in 10 minutes you find out the answer.
