We talk about stress: how it affects us, what are the causes and what we can do to get rid of it. Surely, everyone knows what it means to function under the pressure of stress. But how many of us know what stress is?

Stress is a normal reaction of the body, which activates the body and mind to help it face new challenges. Physiologically, stress is a biochemical reaction of the body to unusual situations. Nowadays, we are dealing with an overload, which is aggravated by professional and private conflicts.

When it comes to stress, hormonal fireworks literally go off in our bodies.

The body is on alert:

  • Pumps acid- and nutrient-rich blood into the muscles
  • Breathing and pulse quicken
  • Blood pressure rises
  • Pupils dilate
  • Muscles become tense
  • The activity of the sexual and digestive organs is reduced
  • Stress causes not only mental but also physical problems. You may experience frequent fatigue, lack of energy, sleep problems, irritability, bad mood, difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness and nervousness.

What can you do to act against stress?

  • Learn to delegate tasks.
  • Learn to say “no”!
  • Turn to relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation.
  • Eat nuts! They are pure brain food.
  • Do sport! Especially outdoors!
  • Give up smoking, alcohol and caffeine!
  • Avoid on-the-go meals.
