However, Russia’s Foreign Ministry warned Ukraine in a statement on Monday that it “cannot ignore” the possibility that the planes have the ability to launch nuclear weapons.
Russia also claimed that the arrival of the F-16s was a “deliberate provocation” by “the United States and NATO”, despite the fact that neither has supplied aircraft to Ukraine.

“We cannot ignore the fact that these aircraft are dual-purpose platforms that can be used for both nuclear and non-nuclear tasks,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The Russian government says French President Emmanuel Macron’s suggestion that NATO troops intervene in the Russia-Ukraine war means the West is “deliberately trying to turn the Ukraine crisis into an open military clash between NATO countries and Russia,” according to the state news agency Sputnik.

Almost all other NATO allies, including the US, have rejected the idea of sending troops to Ukraine for potential fighting. President Joe Biden said during his State of the Union address in March that “there are no American soldiers at war in Ukraine, and I am determined to keep it that way.”
Monday was not the first time Russia has warned that the F-16s will be considered a nuclear threat once the Ukrainian fleet is operational. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov repeatedly made similar remarks after it was announced that Kiev would receive the planes last year.
“Any aircraft is actually capable of nuclear weapons,” Christopher Stewart, a graduate of the US Air Force Weapons School and former F-16 pilot, said in comments to The Kyiv Post last year. “An airship, zeppelin or hot air balloon is capable of launching nuclear weapons.”
