Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro announced at the end of the week that he was admitted to a hospital in the city of Manaus, in the north of the country, to treat a skin infection.
“I am hospitalized at the Santa Julia hospital in Manaus. I have erysipelas, without a planned discharge date,” the 69-year-old Brazilian far-right leader wrote on the X social network.
Erysipelas is an infection caused by a streptococcus and is manifested by inflammation and redness of a limited portion of the skin, most often located on the face and limbs, accompanied by fever, writes Agerpres.
Jair Bolsonaro “was admitted (…) on Saturday morning due to dehydration and a skin infection”, the Santa Julia hospital indicated in a statement on Sunday. “He remains hospitalized for intravenous antibiotic therapy and rehydration,” according to the text.
The former president (2019-2022) arrived on Friday in Manaus, the capital of the Brazilian Amazon, to support deputy Alberto Neto, a candidate for mayor of the city.
On Sunday, Alberto Neto published on his social networks a photo of him with Jair Bolsonaro, smiling, lying on a bed in a hospital room.
With the October municipal elections approaching, the former president is traveling the country to support his party’s candidates.
In recent years, Jair Bolsonaro has undergone several surgeries, the most recent of which was in September 2023 in Sao Paulo, for complications related to the stabbing in the abdominal region during the 2018 election campaign.
