Ben Wallace commented on the idea of ​​”freezing” the war in Ukraine, which was recently advanced by a leading member of Germany’s ruling Social Democratic party.

“In 2014 they froze the conflict and Ukraine had 18,000 soldiers killed on the front line between 2014 and the invasion,” Wallace said Thursday in an interview for dpa. “Russia would rearm, re-equip and do what it did after 2014. And come back later,” he added.

“So the thing about freezing is that you have to guarantee it,” Wallace said. He noted, however, that even Ukraine could not be convinced, given that, in the past, the United Kingdom, the USA and France tried to give guarantees that they would continue to help Kiev.

“So if you’re Ukrainian, would you trust our guarantees right now? And what should we give Ukraine to convince it to freeze (the war)? (…) They could say: give us NATO membership”, added the former British defense minister.

Asked if Ukraine might be willing to accept NATO membership in exchange for an end to fighting for territories occupied by Russia, Wallace dismissed the prospect.

“France and Germany will never accept this. I don’t want to speculate on what the agreement should be. It is up to Ukraine to decide, they are the ones who lost thousands of people. And they are the ones fighting for us now. We are not fighting,” he said.

“I don’t think Russia would accept that either. I mean, Russia would say no, but ultimately we would have to put Russia in a position where it knows it has something to lose,” Wallace said.
