The prosecutor’s office in Madrid requested the closure of the preliminary investigation on Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s wife, Begona Gómez, the RTVE television channel reported on Thursday, according to Agerpres.

Consequently, it would follow that the corruption charges would be dismissed, confirmed a spokesperson of the justice system.

The public prosecutor’s point of view has weight, but only a judge can decide whether or not to open an official investigation.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Wednesday that he is suspending his public duties “for a few days” to decide whether he wants to remain in charge of the government, after a court launched a preliminary corruption investigation into his wife’s private affairs.

Sanchez has accused what he considers to be unwarranted attacks on his family.

Pedro Sanchez, who last year obtained a new mandate as prime minister at the head of a minority coalition government, stated that he will announce his decision on Monday, April 29.

The court investigating Begona Gomez did not provide additional details, as the file is secret in the early stages, only stating that it is a complaint by the anti-corruption group Manos Limpias (Clean Hands), whose leader has links to the extreme right.
