Joe Biden made yet another blunder after reading a “pause” cue from his teleprompter to a bemused audience.

The 81-year-old American president spoke at a union event in Washington DC on Wednesday, where he read pre-prepared signs in front of a crowd of several hundred people, writes The Telegraph.

“I see an America where we defend democracy, not diminish it,” he said. “I see an America where we protect freedoms, not take them away.”

“I see an economy that grows very much from the bottom up, where the rich pay their fair share, so we can have child care, paid vacation, and more, and still reduce the federal deficit and grow the economy.

After listing his accomplishments in office, Mr. Biden told the audience: “Imagine what we could do next. Four more years”.

Then he added, “Pause.”

This cue is believed to have been added by his aides, who hoped Joe Biden would stop speaking to allow the crowd to chant “four more years” to him.

I’m Joe Biden…? The President’s ‘Anchorman Moment’

The blunder has been compared to a scene in the 2004 comedy film Anchorman, in which a news anchor played by American actor Will Ferrell mistakenly reads directions to viewers. Elsewhere in the speech, Joe Biden erroneously claimed to have “reduced the national debt,” which had risen from $21.8 trillion in February 2021 when he took office, to $34.7 trillion.

Joe Biden has become known for his frequent gaffes in his public statements, which have included references to the “nine wonders of the world,” describing a recent meeting with long-deceased former French leader Francois Mitterand, and confusing the presidents of Mexico and Egypt.

In a speech in Florida on Tuesday, Mr. Biden mistakenly said “we cannot be trusted” instead of “we cannot be trusted” in remarks directed at Donald Trump.

Earlier this year, a prosecutor assigned to investigate allegations that he illegally stored classified documents in his garage concluded that he should not stand trial because a jury would find him to be a “well-intentioned older man with a memory weak”.

Mr. Biden’s advisers have defended his mental acuity, describing him as sharp in private meetings and pointing to historical examples of his verbal lapses as evidence that recent gaffes were not caused by his age.
