The Russians suffered heavy losses in the direction of Avdiivka after attacking with 36 tanks and 12 armored vehicles, “the largest number of armored vehicles used by Russia in a single attack since the Battle of Avdiivka”. According to the Institute for the Study of War, Putin’s army will likely focus its spring offensive in one direction.

In the assault on March 30 in the area of the village of Tonenke, from the direction of Avdiivka, the Russians would have lost at least 12 tanks and 8 armored vehicles.

According to the Institute for the Study of War, it was Russia’s first battalion-sized mechanized assault since Moscow began a new campaign to capture the town of Avdiivka in late October 2023.

ISW says that Ukrainian troops had to use a “significant amount of ammunition” to repel this assault, but “the ability to skillfully defend against a large-scale Russian assault in a particularly critical part of the front, in despite the challenges, it suggests that Ukrainian forces can achieve significant results on the battlefield if properly equipped.”

ISW military analysts say Russia may focus its potential late spring or summer offensive against Ukraine in the western part of Donetsk Oblast.

The Russian military command may consider the area near Avdiivka, a key front-line town in the Donetsk region captured by Russia in February, as a priority.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Sîrski, said that a Russian attack on Kharkiv cannot be ruled out.

ISW said that despite warnings of a build-up of Russian forces in other parts of the front, Russia may be focusing on one sector.

“ISW continues to assess that Russian forces will likely be able to launch a large-scale concerted offensive operation in only one operational direction at a time due to Russian planning limitations,” the report said.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said last week that the situation on the battlefield had stabilized compared to previous months, but did not rule out a major Russian offensive in late May or June.
