WhatsApp recently launched a security feature for iPhone users called Passkeys that promises faster and more secure authentication.

Announced in a post on https://twitter.com/WhatsApp/status/1783169135221846430the new feature will gradually roll out to all iOS devices.

Passkeys allows you to log into the app using your iPhone’s biometric authentication, either Face ID or Touch ID, or using your phone’s PIN. This improves the convenience and efficiency of logging in by eliminating the need to enter SMS confirmation codes, which can be useful in areas with poor network signal.

How the Passkeys system works

The Passkeys system works by storing an authentication credential locally on the device, which corresponds to a similar credential saved by the accessed service, in this case WhatsApp. This security mechanism makes authentication faster by eliminating the extra steps often required for identity verification.

Users can check the availability of the new feature by going to the “Settings” section in the WhatsApp app and looking for the “Passkeys” option. This feature could take several weeks to roll out, so users are advised to be patient if they don’t find it available right away.

This feature has been available to Android users since October last year and marks an important step towards eliminating traditional parallels in favor of more secure and convenient authentication methods such as biometrics or other forms of authentication.
