The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, pleaded strongly on Thursday with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, in favor of a “rapid adoption” of a vast military aid program “vital” for his country against the background of the intensification of Russian attacks, reports AFP, transmits Agerpres.
That $60 billion program has been stalled in Congress since last year.
“I informed House Speaker Johnson about the situation on the battlefield, especially about the dramatic increase in Russian air terror. In this situation, the rapid adoption of American aid to Ukraine by Congress is vital,” said Zelenskiy, who spoke by phone with this American official.
Mike Johnson, who controls which bills come up for a vote in the House of Representatives, assured last week that he was examining “a number of tracks” on aid to Ukraine, while the aid plan in question has already been approved by the Senate .
On March 22, the Russian military launched the largest airstrike against Ukrainian energy infrastructure in two years of war.
Zelensky said that Russia launched a total of 190 missiles, sent 140 drones and dropped 700 aerial guided bombs on Ukrainian territory last week.
The United States has been Kiev’s main military backer since the Russian invasion in February 2022.
