“Difficult days are coming for Serbia. At this moment, it is not easy for me to say what news I have received in the last 48 hours. But they directly threaten the vital national interests of both Serbia and Republika Srpska (no – one of the two entities that make up the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina),” Vucic wrote on Facebook.

He also hinted at an alleged uphill battle to come, which Serbia will win.

“In the coming days, I will inform the people of Serbia about all the challenges ahead. It will be hard. We will fight. Serbia will win,” the Serbian head of state also said.

Vucic’s remarks come months after 30 gunmen in armored vehicles stormed a village in a majority-Serb region of Kosovo on September 24, 2023, in an attack that left four dead.

The raid coincided with what the White House described at the time as an “unprecedented” buildup of Serbian troops along the border with Kosovo.

The incidents have raised concerns that Belgrade is interested in escalating the conflict with the Balkan country, which declared independence from Serbia in 2008.

Serbs have never accepted Kosovo’s 2008 declaration of independence and consider the territory a province of theirs. The declaration of independence was not recognized by five EU member states, including Romania.

Although Serbia announced it was withdrawing troops from the border last year, Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti shared a video on social media the other day showing Serbian military units “a few meters away” from the border with Kosovo.

“We are closely monitoring the situation for any attempt to cross into (our) territory,” Kurti said.
