Ambassadors from European Union countries have reached an agreement to extend duty-free food imports from Ukraine, with a “balanced approach between the support given to Ukraine and the protection of EU agricultural markets”, the Belgian presidency of the EU said, according to Reuters.

The agreement will now go to the European Parliament for approval, with the aim of a “quick agreement”, the Belgian presidency stated in a post on the X social media platform.

The deal follows a tentative deal with the European Parliament last week that proposed reintroducing customs duties on some Ukrainian products in the event of oversupply.

Tariffs will go into effect, according to the original agreement, on poultry, eggs, sugar, oats, corn, and honey if imports exceed average levels in 2022 and 2023. The new compromise extends the reference period to include the second half of 2021, according to Reuters sources.

The latest proposal does not include potential restrictions on wheat, despite requests from France, Poland and Hungary.

The extension of duty-free imports has been at the center of widespread protests by farmers in Europe.

Ukrainian Agriculture Minister Mikola Solski said in Brussels on Monday that the grain debate is more political and less a commercial issue.
