Nicușor Dan, about the buildings in Bucharest in case of an earthquake: It will be bad

The Mayor of the Capital, Nicușor Dan, stated that he is concerned about the possibility of a major earthquake in Bucharest. He stated that the situation would be serious, given the fact that many buildings are the same that went through the 1977 earthquake. He pointed out that, in theory, the new constructions comply with all safety regulations, but in practice he does not trust that this thing is always respected.

Asked during the Insider Politic show on Prima TV, on Saturday, about the possibility that the center of the Capital will be affected in the event of an earthquake in Bucharest, Nicușor Dan answered.

“If an earthquake comes, it will be bad, yes. I mean, they are the same buildings that also went through the 1977 earthquake and it will be bad. At the moment, we have projects of about one billion lei of consolidation that are in different phases, either of expertise or of design for the start of execution. The administrative procedures are difficult, but we want to do them according to the book”, explained Nicuşor Dan.

Regarding the number of consolidated seismic risk buildings, the mayor specified that the municipality actually works in three different construction sites. There are projects for which funds are available and others in various stages of development, such as the 150 blocks or buildings of certain sizes. Between 80 and 100 of these are expected to be completed over the next three years.

Buildings are rated for height and age

In parallel, he appreciated that the Ministry of Development adopted a useful initiative, since, over the years, the local administration has acted empirically in building consolidation interventions. The Ministry proposed to carry out a preliminary assessment for all buildings with certain characteristics, such as height and age, estimating that there are approximately 8,000 such buildings in Bucharest.

This assessment would be completed by 2025 and the results, in the form of scores, would serve as a guide for setting priorities and allocating funds according to identified needs. It is important to note that these preliminary assessments are not expertise, but only initial assessment tools.

The mayor of the capital shows skepticism regarding compliance with the technical requirements in the construction of new blocks.

“Here it’s case by case, I don’t know what to say. Theoretically, yes. Basically, I don’t trust it. So the State Construction Inspectorate has two main attributions. One for checking the legality when the authorizations are issued, and here it is catastrophic, and one for checking the resistance structures. I mean, at certain moments during the construction of the block, an engineer from the inspectorate comes and checks that you have put the iron of the right size, that the concrete has been there for the right number of days and all these things. I don’t have enough expertise here, but since the Inspectorate is so bad at checking legality, I have doubts that it is very good on the other side”, declared Nicuşor Dan.
