Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on Monday said he was open to the prospect of deploying nuclear weapons in Sweden during wartime, at a time when critics are calling for their ban on the territory of a new NATO member, AFP and Agerpres inform.

The Swedish parliament will rule in June on the bilateral Defense Cooperation Agreement (DCA) concluded with the US, which will allow Americans to have access to Swedish military bases and store equipment and weapons there.

Sweden ended its 200 years of military non-alignment in March, becoming NATO’s 32nd member state.

Several NGOs, including the Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society, urged the government to include in the agreement a ban on deploying nuclear weapons on Swedish soil. The government has repeatedly stated that such a mention is not necessary, citing a “broader consensus on nuclear weapons” in Sweden, as well as a parliamentary decision banning nuclear weapons in peacetime.

But the Swedish Prime Minister estimated that the situation must be assessed differently in case of war.

Sweden’s prime minister emphasizes that his country will be the one to decide on the deployment of nuclear weapons on its territory

“In wartime, that’s a completely different issue, that completely depends on what would happen,” Kristersson said on public radio. “In the worst case scenario, democratic countries in our region of the world must be able to defend themselves against states that could threaten us with nuclear weapons,” added the head of the Swedish government.

Ulf Kristersson stressed that such a decision would depend on Sweden, not the US.

“Sweden decides for Swedish territory,” he declared. However, he added that “the objective of our accession to NATO and our defense is to ensure that this situation does not occur”.

If Ukraine was a member of NATO, “she would not have been attacked by Russia”, the Prime Minister of Sweden also said. Kristersson’s comments come a week after Russia announced it would hold a military exercise that will include training in the use of tactical nuclear weapons, following what Moscow’s Defense Ministry said were “provocative threats” from Western officials.

The Social Democratic Party, in power in Sweden at the time of the country’s candidacy for NATO in May 2022, said at the time that it would endeavor to express “unilateral reservations against the deployment of nuclear weapons and permanent bases on Swedish territory.”

NATO members Denmark and Norway have both refused to allow permanent foreign military bases or nuclear installations on their territory in peacetime.
