A woman from Leeds, England, claims she was “sentenced to death” by doctors she asked for help but chose to ignore her concerns, resulting in her being diagnosed with ovarian cancer at a very late stage.

Anne Shaw, a 68-year-old woman, was diagnosed with terminal cancer two years after doctors ignored a golf-ball-sized ovarian tumor that was clearly visible on a routine ultrasound in 2019.

Even though the woman sought the help of specialists and made several appointments, the doctors rejected her care. In the fall of 2021, after surgery to remove a large portion of her intestine, the woman was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

The specialists told him that if the tumor had been detected earlier by the doctors at the University Hospital St. James in Leeds, she could have been treated with chemotherapy and monitoring without the need for invasive surgery.

Wanting to raise an alarm, the woman chose to tell her story: “They sentenced me to death, they didn’t have the decency to come and take the blame, to say: <>”.

Because of the surgery, she has developed some complications, such as a hernia, and is forced to wear a collection bag, which means she is forced to wear baggy clothes at all times and is on a restrictive diet.

“My life is not the same anymore. My husband and I used to go out to eat or cook together. Now I can barely eat anything and I’m tired all the time. They are dying because they didn’t act in time. If they had identified the tumor from the first x-ray, maybe I wouldn’t be living what I’m living now“, she also said.

Anne Shaw survived breast and ovarian cancer 20 years ago, which put her at increased risk of developing cancer again, something that should have alerted doctors given her history.

In an attempt to find peace, the woman sought the help of a lawyer, who sued the doctors at St. James of Leeds, accusing them of negligence. She is due to have a meeting with the management of the medical facility in the coming weeks.
