Thursday, April 25, marked 19 years since Romania signed the Treaty of Accession to the European Union.

This allowed it to officially become a member state of the EU on January 1, 2007.

The application for accession to the European Union was submitted by Romania in 1995. In 1999, the leaders of the European Council, gathered in Helsinki, approved the opening of negotiations with some of the member states that had already submitted the application for accession, among them Romania. Negotiations were opened in 2000 and lasted until the end of 2004, when the European Council meeting marked the completion of the negotiations.

From the Romanian side, those who signed the treaty were the president at that time, Traian Băsescu, the prime minister Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu, the foreign minister, Mihai Răzvan Ungureanu, and the chief negotiator with the European Union, Leonard Orban. The signing ceremony of the accession treaty took place in Luxembourg, the country that at that time held the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union.

“For us, membership of the European Union will represent the fulfillment of a half-century-old dream, to overcome all barriers and become part of the European community of values, prosperity and security. Today we signed for our future in a Union based on economic performance, sustainable development, social and economic cohesion. A Union founded on the principles of freedom, democracy and the rule of law. A Union devoted to the practice of tolerance, justice and solidarity. A Union engaged in the development of respect for human dignity, freedom and human rights”, declared after the signing of the treaty, the president of Romania at the time, Traian Băsescu.

Romania signed the Treaty of Accession to the European Union on April 25, 2005, in an official ceremony held at Neumunster Abbey in Luxembourg.
