Initially, a piece of the street collapsed just 40 meters from the residential blocks, and the local authorities stated that they had already alerted the Prefecture and ISU Prahova. The problem is that a large part of the city is built over a salt mine, and the mayor of Slănic Prahova spoke about the collapse of a cavern that caused a chain reaction.

The whole town is built on a salt deposit, and the inhabitants are scared by the scale of the surprise. Some of the people say that the water from Baia Baciului and Baia Roșie would have actually entered the ground. For his part, the mayor Costea Daneluș says that under that street there is a cave, which would have collapsed.

The problem is that the cracking continues, so new cracks have appeared all over the city, right next to residential areas. “For now, in the current situation, we could not take measures, because we have no way of knowing what is underneath. We’ll see what the experts say. We have to take into account that salt has been mined in Slănic for 2000 years, and we only know what happened in the last 200 years.

We still cannot know if we have to relocate families from the affected area. Regarding the water in Baia Baciului, the water has decreased over time, and we are monitoring the phenomenon“, declared the mayor Costea Daneluș, according to Prahova Info. Also, the Prefect of Prahova County, Emil Drăgănescu, sent several ISU Prahova crews to the scene.

It would not be the first time that there are such surprises in the city, as an example the incident at the end of 2023, when cracks appeared in the ground in another area of the city and affected several households. As Libertatea wrote, people have come to live with the fear that they can lose their homes at any time.

The people of Slănic Prahova fear that they will be swallowed up by the earth

The houses that were built above the salt pan are full of cracks, so the mayor Daneluș Costea also talked about the displacement of the affected locals. “My husband and I take turns sleeping at night. We are on guard lest they swallow our land and house with everything. It’s the same with my neighbors. Some moved in with relatives“, the people told the cited source.

Norica Hâncu, a resident of the area, explained how for several years the walls started to crack and strange sounds are always heard when the ground starts to move. “The walls have cracked and all my work is at risk of being swallowed by the ground at any moment. We are standing right above the salt flat. Below us are the galleries. I am desperate.

I have been living here for 12 years, the house is made of brick, built in 1974. I was not given something like this to live”, said the woman. The woman’s cousin testified that she was afraid to live in the area and fled from there. However, not all people have a place to move and cannot afford to make this radical change in their lives.

“The mayor and two representatives of the salt mine came on November 27. They took some soil samples and that was it. They didn’t tell us anything at all. They will be back on Monday. What do affected people do until Monday? We are waiting to die in the houses, God forbid?!”asked the woman affected, like other residents of Slănic Prahova, by this problem.

The mayor then explained that “salt’s worst enemy” it’s fresh water, because it erodes the deposit. “There is a risk of putting the lock on me, which would be a disaster for the town. Until the specialists come, we don’t know anything for sure”, declared the mayor then. The Unirea Mine, or Salina Slănic Prahova, is located at a depth of 208 meters, on an area of 53,000 square meters.
