A 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit Taiwan on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at 7:58 am local time, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences. Japan issued an evacuation order for the coastal areas near the southern prefecture of Okinawa after a tsunami alert was issued following the earthquake.

A 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit Taiwan on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at 7:58 am local time, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences. Japan issued an evacuation order for the coastal areas near the southern prefecture of Okinawa after a tsunami alert was issued following the earthquake. So far, no tsunami warning has been issued for Taipei and Hualien.
The earthquake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter in the ocean near Hualien City, Taiwan. The Japan Meteorological Agency has forecast that the tsunami could have a height of up to three meters and it is anticipated to hit the southwestern coast of Japan around 10 am local time. The agency also warned that tsunami waves of the same height are expected to reach the remote Japanese islands near Taiwan, including Miyakojima island.
The agency said in a tweet that it will hold a press conference at 10:30 am local time about the earthquake.

Videos of damages started coming in on social media with many users reporting that buildings were shaking, with some of them even collapsing. Freelance journalist Wali Khan tweeted that a multistory building on Zhongshan road in Hualien had collapsed.
“A Multistory Building on the Corner of Congquing and Zhongshan Road has Partially Collapsed in Hualien as 7.5 Magnitude Earthquake hit Taiwan,” he tweeted, along with the following video.
